The people behind the threads: buyers and sellers working .co.za and .com names, appraisers who post comps instead of opinions, and the quiet hands who handle escrow, registrar transfers and the renewal admin nobody else wants.

How the members boards are read

A few working definitions keep the appraisal and marketplace threads useful. They are not rules of law, just the shared reading most regulars apply before they reply.

"Comparable" means a closed sale

A listing price is not a comp. When you post an appraisal request, the numbers that carry weight are completed handovers with a date and a registrar. Asking prices from parking pages get noted, then set aside.

Appraisals are opinions, not offers

A reply in the appraisal board is a member's read on the name, nothing more. Nobody in that thread is bound to buy, and a range posted there is not a commitment on either side.

"Sold" is not "paid"

In the marketplace section, a name marked sold has cleared escrow and moved. Deals agreed but still sitting in transfer windows are labelled pending, with the registrar named, so nobody counts them twice.

.co.za and .com are not interchangeable

Transfer steps, confirmation windows and the paperwork differ between the two. A walkthrough written for a .com handover will not map cleanly onto a .co.za move, so check which one the thread is about.

Screenshots need context

A dashboard image without the date, registrar and currency leaves the room guessing. Members who post the surrounding details get sharper replies, and their threads stay readable months later.

Beginner questions are on topic

Asking whether a name is worth keeping is a fair post in the beginner corner, not clutter. What gets pushed back on is a request for a valuation with no name, no extension and no ask attached.

Where a thread touches renewals, WHOIS records or a dispute, members are expected to say which registrar and which date they are describing. That single habit removes most of the arguments before they start.

What the room says about the room

Members keep the appraisal board honest by posting comps, screenshots and timelines. These are notes from people who have been through a .co.za handover, a stalled escrow, or a backorder queue that went sideways.

"Posted a .co.za name with my ask and got three comps back within a day. One member flagged a registrar transfer delay I hadn't hit yet. Saved me a week of back-and-forth."

"The escrow walkthrough thread is the reason my first .com handover didn't fall apart. Step order, EPP codes, the awkward gap before release. All written out plainly."
Pieter v. R. - Cape Town, member since 2019
"Asked in the beginner corner whether a name was worth keeping. Got a straight no, with reasons. That's the kind of answer you don't get from a sales page."
Naledi K. - Johannesburg, member since 2023

Negotiation signals

Reading Buyer Intent Before You Quote

The first reply from an end user usually tells you more than the name itself. This thread breaks down the wording, timing and follow-up patterns members have logged, and when a low anchor is a test rather than a ceiling.
